Breed Council Meeting 31/10/09: Press Release
The Dachshund Breed Council met on Sunday 31st October with representatives from 17 of the 19 member Clubs present (apologies received from the other 2).
Dr. Ruth Barbour (Chairman of the KC Breeds Strategy Group) made a presentation to the Council on the work of her group and congratulated the Council on its positive and proactive approach to updating the Dachshund Breed Standard. All the proposed amendments from the 2008 review have now been implemented.
Reports were received from the “lead Clubs” on the priority health issues identified in the 6 Dachshund breeds. Cord1 PRA testing continues to be well-supported by Club members and the KC has recently written, at the request of the Council, to everyone who has bred a MLHD in the past five years to explain the requirement for testing. This is seen as a major step in educating the large numbers of non-Breed Club members who either ignore or are unaware of the need to test their dogs before breeding and to remove Affected dogs from the gene pool.
The Wirehaired Dachshund Club presented its proposals for implementing a UK-wide DNA screening programme for Lafora’s Disease, a form of epilepsy that is believed to affect approximately 5% of Miniature Wirehaired Dachshunds. Further details of testing arrangements, locations and costs will follow.
The Council’s approach to Education and Training has been reviewed and an updated set of resources will be available for Clubs wishing to organise seminars and A2 Assessments. Proposals were presented for the introduction of a Mentoring Scheme to be made available to aspiring judges and others interested in the breed. The scheme will be launched at the forthcoming Breed Conference (29/11/09) where further information will be provided on how to participate.
The Council agreed that, as the Conference had been over-subscribed, individual Clubs would organise a series of Seminars and Assessments in 2010 to ensure changes to the Breed Standard could be communicated more widely. The Council will also be running a Stewarding Seminar as part of its education programme in 2010.
Full Minutes of the meeting will be published on the Council’s website www.dachshundbreedcouncil.org.uk
