Understanding your dog’s behaviour – 2 must-read articles

Here are links to two very interesting articles on dog behaviour, published by the veterinaryexpert.com.  They look at where so-called Dominance theory (Alpha dogs and Pack Leaders) originated and how well it stands up in light of the most recent research into dog behaviour.   It also discusses why some behaviourists believe that using these methods can be detrimental to a dog’s welfare and may even make some problem behaviours worse, and what alternatives there are.

Part 1

Part 2

They are written by Stephanie Hedges who has a first class honours degree in Veterinary Nursing and worked as a vet nurse for over 20 years. She studied Applied Animal Behaviour at the University of Southampton and started her canine behaviour practice in 2005. She is a full member of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC) and now combines her full time role as a Behaviour Counsellor with lecturing undergraduates, acting as the Veterinary Nursing Rep for the APBC and a variety of speaking engagements.
