What’s happened to Dachshund registrations and show entries over the last 10 years?

I’ve done some analysis of registration trends in Dachshunds from 2007 to 2015 and compared them with Championship show entries. For each variety I have presented the Annual Average Entry chart and the Annual Registration chart. I apologise that the charts show 2015 on the left and 2007 on the right of the horizontal axis, but that’s because all the entry data is extracted from the KC’s website in that order.

Mini Smooths:

MS registrations increased by 45% between 2007 and 2015 (calculated from the trendline) and we all know how they seem to be on almost every advert as well as appearing on Gogglebox and now, Coronation Street.

Their average championship show entries declined by 20% over the same period so it looks like their popularity as pets hasn’t translated into new exhibitors.

Mini Longs:

ML registrations declined by 40% between 2007 and 2015 (calculated from the trendline) and, over that period, their average entries declined by 15%. For every 100 reduction in registrations, there was an average 2% reduction in entries. This is lower than the rate at which MS entries have declined and, considering the reduction in registrations, their entries have actually held up well.

Mini Wires:

MW registrations declined by 28% between 2007 and 2015 (calculated from the trendline) and, over that period, their average entries declined by 40%. For every 100 reduction in registrations, there was an average 10% reduction in entries. This is significantly higher than for any of the other Dachshund varieties and must be a cause for concern among MW exhibitors, I would think.

The average entry as a percentage of annual registrations has fallen by about 8% over the 10 years, but there is quite a degree of variation from year to year and, overall, I’d say average entries have fallen in line with registrations. I don’t think the decline in registrations can be attributed to the introduction of Lafora testing as the decline began before the testing began and has been pretty steady year-on-year.

Smooths:

Smooth registrations declined by 13% between 2007 and 2015 (calculated from the trendline), although it must be noted that there was a lot of variation from year to year. Over that period, their average entries declined by 22%. Overall, their entries as a percentage of registrations have remained fairly steady.

Long Dachshunds:

Long registrations declined by 38% between 2007 and 2015 (calculated from the trendline) and over that period, their average entries declined by 15%. In light of the reduction in registrations, it appears that their entries have actually held up remarkably well and the average entry as a percentage of registrations has actually increased.

Wire Dachshunds:

Wire registrations increased by 19% between 2007 and 2015 (calculated from the trendline) and over that period, their average entries declined by 29%. As with the Mini Smooths, there is little evidence that higher registrations have resulted in any increase in entries. In fact, the average entry as a percentage of annual registrations has nearly halved over the 10 years.
